Safety

The Chevrolet Equinox EV has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Equinox EV and the Ioniq 5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

There are over 3 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are Hyundai dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Equinox EV’s warranty.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Equinox EV has larger standard tires than the Ioniq 5 (245/55R19 vs. 235/55R19).

The Chevrolet Equinox EV’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Equinox EV’s turning circle is 1.2 feet tighter than the Ioniq 5’s (38.1 feet vs. 39.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Equinox EV has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Ioniq 5 (6.4 vs. 6.1 inches), allowing the Equinox EV to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space

The Equinox EV has 2.1 inches more front hip room and .9 inches more front shoulder room than the Ioniq 5.

Towing

The Equinox EV’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Ioniq 5’s (1500 vs. 0 pounds).

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Equinox EV uses the StabiliTrak® sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The Equinox EV’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Ioniq 5’s standard power windows’ passenger windows don’t open automatically. The Ioniq 5 SEL/Limited’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to lower them fully.

If the windows are left open on the Equinox EV the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Ioniq 5 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Equinox EV’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Ioniq 5’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Equinox EV has a standard rear wiper. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Both the Equinox EV and the Ioniq 5 offer available heated front seats. The Equinox EV also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Ioniq 5.

Recommendations

The Chevrolet Equinox outsold the Hyundai Ioniq 5 by over six to one during 2023.
